Hello, and welcome to day 9 of Birthday Blog Bash. The entire month of January I will be posting everyday.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a fantastic show, which is an Amazon Prime Member Exclusive. The synopsis of the show is:
"Miriam "Midge" Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she's ever wanted--the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent--one that changes her life forever. She charts a course that takes her from her comfortable life on Riverside Drive, through the basket houses and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she storms the world of stand-up comedy...a course that will ultimately lead her to a spot on Johnny Carson's couch." The show first aired on Amazon March 17, 2017 with all episodes streaming November 29, 2017 For more information about the show itself check out Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb and the trailer. If more convincing needs to be done for you to watch the show, continue reading.
Most of what I heard about this show before I watched is, if you like Gilmore Girls then you will like The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel. Amy Sherman Palladino, the fantastic lady who brought us Gilmore Girls, also brought us The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel. The quick witted dialogue that we love is in existence with this show. Although, much of the dialogue is not for younger viewers it is beautifully written. The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel was nominated for two Golden Globes, and won both of the nominations.
I love everything about this show, and can't wait for season two. When I'm watching or reading I search for ways to make it seem relevant to present day America. The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel is extremely relevant to present day, but also displays a groundbreaking story for 1950s America. Women's Rights have come along since the beginning of time, and there's still progress to be made all over the world. Actress, Rachel Brosnahan, plays a strong female lead in time where there isn't an abundance of strong female leads in Hollywood. The whole time she is playing a character, who is trying to navigate herself in a male dominant society and career path as a comedian.
All of the characters in the world are fantastic. The character development is on point. Every single character goes through development, and none of them I hate. Midge goes through a drastic development in only eight episodes. You see her become less shallow. And on the journey of becoming less shallow you see her start to question the societal norms surrounded by woman. In the end she doesn't care what men think about her. She doesn't care about having the 'perfect' life because no one has a 'perfect' life, and if they did it's facade. Midge's parents,Rose and Abe, are perfect examples of the facade. Over the course of the first season her parents start out by trying to keep up this image they created for themselves, but by the end of the season you see that their lives aren't perfect. Rose and Abe have relationship trouble towards the end, and aren't the perfect couple the show leads us to believe. One my favorite characters besides Midge, is Alex. Alex becomes Midge's manger, and friend. Alex starts out rough, and doesn't seem to care about the personal side of things. However, as the show goes on Alex it is revealed she does care about the personal side. She just never had a friend or a family before. Alex's and Midge's relationship dynamic is one of my favorites in the show. Joel, Midge's husband, starts off only caring about himself, but he slowly starts to care about what he has to do for his family. I enjoy Joel's character, but he's not on my favorites list.
The plot honestly drags you in from the beginning. The show watches as Midge's diary, and it's one of my favorite aspects of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. There is nothing added to the plot that doesn't impact Midge. Everything that happens impacts her in some way. I'm interested in how the plot will play out in season two.
I highly recommend The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel. My review cannot bring enough justice to the show. Words cannot bring enough justice, the show speaks for itself.
